Wholesale market halls, Munich/Germany
the heart of commerce
The wholesale market halls – between Thalkirchnerstraße and Schäftlarnstraße – are located in the heart of Munich since 1912. On more than 400,000 square meters over 60 shops provide high-value products on a daily basis: fresh products, delicatessen, fish and meat, milk and cheese, flowers etc. Within a radius of about 400 square kilometres, the wholesale market halls are the only institution of its kind, providing food markets, restaurants and the like for over five million people within the region thus underscoring its strategic importance for the location.
Since its reconstruction after the Second World War the appearance of the building structure and of the markets only changed a little. Because of the fact, the wholesale market halls were no longer meeting the current requirements for hygiene, fire protection, presentation and protection of goods, health and safety as well as logistics and infrastructure.
In order to “make the wholesale market halls future-proof” the City of Munich decided to apply sustainable concepts and rethink the property entirely.
DIEDERICHS was appointed to draw up a holistic concept to develop and secure the facility by applying modern urban and transport planning while considering economic and sustainable criteria. To meet the universal requirements, the general conditions, internal and external zoning, the market situation, the regulatory requirements, organizational needs as well as integration and participation of the various parties are being investigated. In an interactive dialogue among all stakeholders - managers, traders, service providers, customers and neighbours - industry-specific needs will be determined and integrated into the concept.
