On the verge of Schlosspark Charlottenburg stands the privately run Schlosspark Clinic, university teaching hospital owned by the charity. The original surgical ward with 3 operating theatres had become outdated. It was necessary to construct 5 new operating theatres with associated technical rooms, building services installations and side rooms as well as a larger central sterilisation ward.

The task was realised through partitial demolition of the previous operating rooms on the first floor and the addition of two storeys. The functions provided by the main entrance, kitchen and cafeteria had to be maintained over the entire construction period. The additional load from the additional building floor will be diverted over the existing fundaments through an incorporated lightweight construction. Parallel to that, and also during current operation, the existing ward on the 2nd floor of the neighbouring original building (area) was converted into an interdisciplinary intensive care unit with intermediate care and post-anaesthetic recovery rooms.

After target specification, the building works were planned and realised within a period of 9 months. Operating theatres were out of order for a period of 4.5 months and could be restarted on the due date of the 6th of December 2004. The unusually short planning and construction period was managed through the commissioning of a general contractor, in connection with committed and target-oriented client and user representatives as well as co-operative and tight project controlling. DIEDERICHS supported the planning and realisation of the works and made an essential contribution to the adherence of schedules, quality and cost targets.
