A consistent regional waste management for ’Märkischer Kreis’ revealed the necessity to optimise the waste fuelled power station in Iserlohn. It was planned to relieve the district´s own landfill sites through thermal waste treatment. Planning and realisation were subject to strict emission limit values according to the Federal Emision Control Act. This is only possible with optimised state-of-the-art plants and equipment. At the same time, the requirements fo overall capacity and operating grade of the waste fuelled power station had to be met.

The new construction of an unloading hall and the extension of the existing waste bunker arrangement increased the storage capacity and reduced the acoustic emission during the unloading. The new crushing unit improves the waste combustion.

Further measures were, e. g.,

- deconstruction and reconstruction of a third line of boilers with electrostatic precipitators;

- extension/construction of the flue gas washing, NOX and dioxin removal plants, etc.;

- adaptation of the smokestack installation;

- extension of district heating capacity;

- various structural and constructural adaptions.

In close co-operation between the client and DU, the budget for the extension of the waste bunker and the unloading hall had not been fully used, so that the strain on the overall budget could be relieved.
